Bendataway Benjamin Sisson. Artist & Art Dealer

Erfstukken

Airloom is a term I appropriated from a series of early drawings by Richard Prince. These lampshade-like forms hover over the heads of his figures and he imagined them representing "the shit that hangs over our heads." His play on the word "heirloom" seems to reference the fact that the artist walks into their career inheriting a mass of moral dilemmas from the social positioning of the art object itself.

GOAL

The goal of my Airloom project will be to provide artists with a template to build their own collections, to construct their own art historical narratives from both personally and social relevant data and to sell this visual information in the marketplace. This project will encourage artists to utilize their naturally accumulating artist collections as an art practice that will challenge pre-existing class structures around property and social change. Specifically, Airlooms will break down the class barrier between ownership and charity by developing a business model of collecting that will resist all forms of incorporation. This will be accomplished by exploring the utility of a natural, though as yet, unmapped accumulation of assets; the art that is collected in the process of making art (through purchase, trade or gift).
